ABSTRACT. A previously invalid name, Magnolia champacifolia J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain, was validated by Vu et al. in 2015. However the authors, instead of designating the holotype, erroneously designated a lectotype, that cannot be corrected to holotype, following Art. 9.10 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Shenzhen Code). As the Art. 40.6 no longer allows, since the 1st January 1990, the designation of a “lectotype” in naming a new species, the name is still invalid. As the species is worthy of recognition, M. champacifolia is validated here by choosing the specimen Poilane 6472 with barcode P00203965 kept at the herbarium P as the holotype.

RÉSUMÉ. Réexamen de la validation du nom Magnolia champacifolia, sp. nov. J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain (Magnoliaceae). Un nom précédemment invalide, Magnolia champacifolia J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain, a été validé par Vu et al. en 2015. Cependant, les auteurs ayant désigné par erreur un lectotype, au lieu de désigner un holotype, le nom est dès lors invalide. En effet, le lectotype n’est pas corrigible en holotype, selon l’Art. 9.10 du Code international de Nomenclature pour les Algues, les Champignons et les Plantes (Code de Shenzhen), et l’Art. 40.6 ne permet plus, depuis le 1er janvier 1990, l’utilisation du terme “lectotype” pour désigner le spécimen type d’une nouvelle espèce. L’espèce méritant d’être reconnue, M. champacifolia est validée ici en choisissant le spécimen Poilane 6472 (P00203965), conservé à l’herbier P, comme holotype.

INTRODUCTION

The genus Magnolia L. was established by Linnaeus (1753) and is represented by c. 358 accepted species (POWO 2024), distributed in Himalaya to Japan & West Malesia and north-eastern America to tropical America (Mabberley 2017).

The name Magnolia ‌champacifolia ‌J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain was not validly published, because the original diagnosis given by Gagnepain (1938) was in French, not in Latin. Thus, Gagnepain did not validate the name Magnolia ‌champacifolia ‌J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain according to Art. 39.1 of the Shenzhen code (Turland et al. 2018). Later, Vu et al. (2015) validated the name by providing a latin diagnosis but unfortunately designated the lectotype rather than holotype, thus the name is invalid as per the Art. 40.6 of the Shenzhen code (Turland et al. 2018). Even though, in the abstract, Vu et al. (2015) stated that the name is validated there by designating the flowering sheet as the holotype. However, this cannot constitute effective validation because the authors failed to indicate the herbarium in which the type is conserved (Art. 40.7 of the Shenzhen code, Turland et al. 2018). Therefore, the name M. ‌champacifolia ‌J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain is validated here and the specimen Poilane 6472 with barcode P00203965 housed in P is designated as the holotype, which was the specimen cited by Vu et al. (2015).

Type material. — Vietnam • Annam, Province Nhatrang, Nord de Ninh Hoa, versant sud-est du massif de la Mère et l’Enfant; 1300 m; 17.V.1923; Poilane 6472; holotype: P[P00203965!]; isotype: P[P00204036!]).

Distribution. — Vietnam.

Note

Singularly, Chen Bao Liang and Xia Nianha independently annotated the type specimens (P00203965 and P00203966) of Magnoliachampacifolia ‌J. E. Dandy ex F. Gagnepain as M. ‌albosericea ‌Chun & Tsoong. According to Vu et al. (2015) M.champacifolia and M. ‌albosericea belongs to the section Gwillimia ‌DC (Figlar & Nooteboom 2004), but the former species can be distinguished from the latter by its leaf blades lanceolate, midvein densely villous, apex acuminate (vs. oblong-elliptic, midvein sparsely long sericeous, apex acute to short acuminate in M. ‌albosericea), lateral veins 13-14 pairs (lateral veins 15-20 pairs in M. ‌albosericea), petiole c. 4.5 cm long, densely villous when young (vs petiole up to 3.5 cm long, glabrous when young in M. ‌albosericea) and spathe densely villous (vs densely papillate in M. ‌albosericea).
